One-thousand square miles of a vast mountain range make up the Angeles National Forest, running west to east across the San Gabriel Valley, perfect for hiking and adventuring.

The Angeles National Forest was established by Executive Order in December 1892. Covering over 650,000 acres (about one-quarter of Los Angeles County), it is one of 18 National Forests in California, and one of 156 in the Nation.

The Angeles National Forest covers a total of 700,176 acres (1,094.0 sq mi; 2,833.5 km 2), protecting large areas of the San Gabriel Mountains and Sierra Pelona Mountains. It is located just north of the densely inhabited metropolitan area of Greater Los Angeles.

Barely 30 minutes from the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles, and just north of Pasadena, the urban jungle gives way to the forests, rugged slopes, and rocky canyons of Angeles National Forest.

The Angeles National Forest offers 557 miles of hiking and equestrian trails which include 73 miles of National Recreation Trails and 176 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). These trails offer ample choices for all, from beginners to experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

The first national forest in the State of California and second in the United States, Angeles National Forest was created by proclamation of President Benjamin Harrison on December 20, 1892.
