The Coast Guard reports that a jet that went missing in Alaska rapidly lost altitude and speed before losing signal. Lt. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble of the U.S. Coast Guard added that at least one of the searchers flying over frigid seas and combing through miles of frozen tundra had discovered “some sort of item of interest” on Friday afternoon,

The Cessna Caravan left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m., and officials lost contact with it less than an hour later, according to David Olson, director of operations for Bering Air. The aircraft was 12 miles (19 kilometers) offshore, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said three people were found dead inside of the plane, and it's clear from the wreckage there were no survivors.
