Adobe, not surprisingly, also offers a free download for Mac or Windows PC to convert any (or most) raw files into the more open .DNG format (I may write about this in the near future).

Convert raw files to DNG is probably the best long term compatibility for raw files, although I expect that converts would still be able to read the old files for quite a long time.
