A huge magnitude 7.1 earthquake has hit the holy city of Shigatse, or Xigazê, in the autonomous region of Tibet in China.

Chinese authorities say nearly 100 people have been killed after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the holy Tibetan city of Shigatse, with the death toll expected to rise.

Chinese media also reported that as of 10 a.m. local time, multiple aftershocks were recorded, the largest of which was 4.4.
