Wearing the new Club World Cup winners badge, Chelsea was held to a scoreless draw at home against Crystal Palace, looking less than lively in their opening match. West Ham, which has spent more than $90 million to upgrade the team this summer, was crushed 3-0 by newly-promoted Sunderland.

Chelsea strolled to their first win of the Premier League season, coming from behind to thrash West Ham United 5-1 at the London Stadium. The Hammers had taken an early lead through Lucas Paqueta, but it didn’t take the recently-crowned world champions long to take complete control in East London.

No one is doubting Paqueta’s ability, and he is more than capable of dragging West Ham out of the mess they find themselves in, but Potter’s whole ethos during pre-season was that he wanted a tight-knit group that worked hard for each other. In that regard, Paqueta let his teammates down.
