Texas has climbed to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 women's basketball poll after defeating two top teams in a Thanksgiving tournament.

Entering the 2025-26 season, UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma believed he was going to have one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country. But before Sunday’s game at Xavier, the Huskies weren’t living up to that potential.

The Huskies will then be off for fall semester final exams before going to Los Angeles to face USC Dec. 13 in a rematch of a 2025 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight game. The Trojans defeated the Huskies in Hartford during the regular season and the matchup at the Galen Center completes a home-and-home.

The 2025-26 season tipped off with last year’s Final Four on top of the preseason poll, and the three non-UConn teams entered as the most realistic contenders to dethrone the Huskies. The inaugural Players Era championship provided a unique opportunity to evaluate that trio of Texas, UCLA and South Carolina, as they battled in Las Vegas.

The UConn women’s basketball team combined for 18 made 3-pointers against Xavier on Sunday to open Big East play with a 104-39 victory.
