DC and Dorchester County in Maryland are among few local districts to embrace widespread use of weapons' detection systems in schools.

With school back in session, Spartanburg County School District 3 is trying to keep students as safe as possible.

The district’s six middle and high schools began using the new metal detection systems last week. They are set up at the entrance of each school to detect weapons such as guns and large knives.

Elementary students at Lafayette Parish school returning from the holiday break will now walk through weapons detection systems when they arrive on campus.

A new metal detector system will launch Thursday at Woodside High School in Newport News. In a letter to families, school officials said it's being done in an effort to increase safety and security.
