North Carolina's coast was the "winner" for this winter storm, with parts of the Outer Banks getting 9 inches of snow.

But there have been times in the past where the pristine beaches, piers, lighthouses and landmarks get their share of white flurries.

A snowstorm is underway Tuesday night at the North Carolina Outer Banks with even Wilmington to see 5 inches of snow, officials said.

Bitter cold is to be expected for the rest of the week, as well. Daily highs will be in the 20s through Wednesday, with early morning lows in the single digits to mid-teens.
