The governor was quick to request federal assistance last week after devastating floods hit the Texas Hill Country.

At least 119 people have been found dead in nearly a week since heavy rainfall overwhelmed the river and flowed through homes and youth camps in the early morning hours of July 4. Ninety-five of those killed were in the hardest-hit county in central Texas, Kerr County, where the toll includes at least three dozen children.

The claim spread widely on social media after the floods that devastated the Lone Star State in early July 2025.

As search efforts entered their fifth day in the devastating Central Texas floods, Gov. Greg Abbott vowed to find "every single missing person," stressing that the mission will not end until all victims are accounted for amid a death toll that has surpassed 100.

The governor said Tuesday that the state had “assets, resources and personnel” in place before the July 4 floods.

After his comments, many shared their criticism of Abbott on social media. Make Mindful Decisions posted on X, "That's absolutely tone-deaf. When lives are lost, the first question should be accountability—not cheesy sports metaphors. Abbott's locker room act is exactly what people don't need right now."
